1.
Scholarly
(knowing) is demonstrated by taking a quiz
2.
Practical
(applying) is demonstrated by completing activities for each module that lead
up to the final development of a virtual organization department presentation
3.
Integration
(becoming) is a reflection of what was learned and checklist of application to
management experiences
This learning
package provides a unique learning environment. Learning is based upon
completion of exercises that require the student to not only understand the
concepts presented, but to apply those concepts in the definition of a
“virtual” department in an imaginary organization. The students work in a team or alone to
produce a final product – a PowerPoint presentation about their “dream”
department. A PowerPoint template is provided for structure, and a tutorial
explains how to use PowerPoint to complete the model. Module exercises or assignments are
incorporated into the presentation. When complete, the presentation represents
a vision of a department with these components:
Concepts regarding teamwork, project management,
task definition, and delegation are utilized and applied by the student during
completion of exercises. For example,
when students learn about personality types and how they fit into a team
effort, they must apply this knowledge to their own team and structure the team
organization and work to be accomplished to maximize the skill utilization of
the team. In looking at task development and management, they apply principles
of budgeting their own time and resources to accomplish each of the objectives
within the allocated timeframe.
Technology tools such as spreadsheets, drawing
tools, presentation tools, and project management tools are demonstrated in
tutorials with accompanying activities that allow the student to apply each
tool to their assignment. This hands-on focused experiential learning is a key
element of student success. Each
technology tutorial is presented in a multi-media tutorial with accompanying
sample document. The work is designed to be completed at a distance, thus
involving the student not only in project work, but in the complexities added
in working at a distance. Distant work
coordination is a growing factor in all work environments and demands a high
degree of communication and documentation of an ongoing project. This formalization of work further enhances
the student learning experience.
A computerized testing package is included on the CDs, allowing students to take quizzes and tests from their computer. The module tests are intended for self-check. The exam tests are timed – providing one hour to answer 50 questions. Tests are graded by the software and test results are automatically emailed to the instructor. Both pre and post tests are included with each module. A midterm and final are also provided. Instructors may opt to have students use these exams to prepare for a proctored exam, or include the scores as part of the grade.
·
Each module has a multiple choice Post-Test
quiz (between 9 and 20 questions per module)
· Pre-test has a subset of the questions (3 or 4). This allows checking of knowledge gained without giving away the quiz.
